Whats the purple dohickey on the compressor housing?

1Revvin7 05-10-2004 11:36 PM

I think those have something to do with decreasing restriction since there are no flat edges.Air horn or trumpet ? I read a big debate on those a while back and forgot everyword. lol.

j9fd3s 05-10-2004 11:38 PM

its an air horn, they work!

I always see those on thumper turbos. Doesn't it also have something to do with anit surge limiting?

mazdaspeed7 05-10-2004 11:53 PM

It prevents a vena contracta condition, which limits flow.

Need a longer explanation?

Lionheart240 05-11-2004 01:09 AM

...Looks like a gaping *******...

LOL

If you left the turbo without a filter on the front of it you risk sucking in well...anything, right? Just for show, right?

Fd3BOOST 05-11-2004 06:10 AM

Couldn't you use one with some screen in between that and the compressor housing? Where would you buy something like that? I be interested to know more about them. Is it just called an air horn?

Fd3BOOST 05-13-2004 03:53 PM

where do they sell these?

rxrotary2_7 05-13-2004 04:10 PM

turbonetics

Fd3BOOST 05-15-2004 10:31 AM

I guess I need the catalog. Its not listed on the website.

BigTurbo74 05-15-2004 02:51 PM

So is the catalog worth ordering then?

rfreeman27 05-16-2004 10:27 AM

You could probally set up a screen inbetween the two peices. Are screens safe, and do they flow better then a good filter?

FD3S DRIFT 05-16-2004 11:06 AM

any other colors?

Lionheart240 05-16-2004 12:10 PM

You can't DRIVE with that on though, can you? I mean...no filter = death, right???

Don't you need a stand-alone just to be able to not use an MAF? I can't see how people are able to just hook up a cone filter directly to the turbo.

no a screen will NOT flow beter than a proper filter or just leaving it open....

Yea, hook me up and toss one in the box.

Thanks

I have driven with no filters on the intake before I woud say that your ok as long as you dont go down any dirt roads.

???HP7 05-16-2004 04:00 PM

that's for the strip or show only. you cant drive that aroud town all day unless yuo like riskin your engine and turbo being destroyed. at the strip you can get away with running the airhorn without filter and such for max power and boost. but on the street it just isn't worth the rebuild and new turbo your are gonna need after a while.

9BASE3 05-17-2004 07:24 PM

the part is actually called an inducer diffuser. There are also anit-surge bleed ype diffusers.

I'v been told 500 RPM faster spool with no filter, and when my filter fell off one time i deff felt more power. I was on a rode i drive allost everyday floored in 1'st i had never broken loose on this rode in 1'st ever till that day. When i looked under the hood my filter was missing.
