I'm ditching the To4 hybrid on my FD and getting a real turbo.

When it comes down to T66 vs. T78 vs. GT35/40, I think rebuild cost is a major consideration.

Not because I think any of them are likely to wear out during the time I have them, but because sooner or

later I'll end up popping the motor and putting an apex seal through the turbine.

Not that I'm going to be doing anything stupid. I've rebuilt the motor and everything will be set up properly to handle the big single. However when your routinely thrashing your 13B with big HP you can't expect it to last forever.

Therefore I'm not considering the T78 due to difficulty of getting a new turbine/shaft and rebuild kit.

(Sorry Vosko )

So it comes down to the T66 (non-ball bearing version) or GT35/40 both of which are similar in price.

To rebuilt a T66 assuming I need a new P trim turbine wheel I'd be looking at $281 for the part plus $150 for the local turbo guy to put it together with a new bushes/balanced etc. So at under $450 it wouldn't be the end of the world.

From what I've been told there are 2 versions of the GT35/40 (with 1.06 exhaust housings). Both are identical in terms of wheels housings etc. However the normal GT35/40 is not rebuildable. Itstead you must buy a new cartridge with both wheels/ bearings etc. How much are these?

The second version of the GT35/40 has been dubbed the GT35/40R (R for rebuildable). Initially these cost more but can be rebuild by a few places. However a rebuild with two new bearings is almost $600 plus $280 (assuming the turbine wheel is similarly priced to a P Trim wheel for a T66). So the rebuild cost for the R version is still going to be double the cost of fixing a T66.

I can get a normal GT35/40 for $1250 and the R version is apparently "significantly more expensive".

Therefore I'm thinking about just sticking with the old T66. Anyone care to comment?

I'd agree with you...go with the T66.

The GT35/40R is about $300 more then the regular from what I understand. We thought about getting these kits, but to be honest, if you ever need to rebuild the regular GT35/40...you did something horribly wrong. Yes, I can understand sending that APEX seal through them and yes, it does happen, but are you willing to give up that Garrett quality and power for that T66? If you get a kit from us, we take core trade ins for $$ to lessen the amount you pay for repairs.

BTW, the only source I know for rebuild cartridges is Australia. Garrett USA doesn't care a 35/40. Its a custom turbo. I just ordered the rebuild cartridge. After shipping it came out to about $950. Expensive... but you get the entire center secting with new ball bearings and both the compressor and exhaust wheels. You just bolt your old compressor and exhaust housings onto it and you're good to go.
