So as some of you might know, I used to be a supra-fanatic. And now I still get crap about the Rx7 (unreliable, flipup lights outdated, looks like a miata blah blah blah)....But in one arguement I found myself short of information:

Exactly how long can the 13b (FD) last with a single turbo?

Seems to me, as long as you have the fuel/air mix controlled and healthy it should be pretty good. As well, you shouldn't overboost.

But when it comes to HP figures, I simply told my friend that a BPU Supra was the speed I was looking for...and when you do that in an Rx7 (you would need 315-350rwhp) with stock twins *correctly*..The engine can last quite long.

As supra's turn up the juice and become 800hp powerhouses though, what type of HP/setup does the rx7 need to compete? Are those owners just not "getting around" or what?

I know that some amazing ET's have been had with a great tuning job of even the stock twins...

Well all the bolt ons with a single turbo running stock boost will last probably just as long as stock and be 10 times more reliable....regardless what anyone else may say. A single turbo running as much boost as you can squeze out of pump gas will get around 450rwhp with any of the medium to larger turbo's, maybe more with bigger turbo's and tuning factors, and less with smaller turbo's. Keep in mind supra's are big fat pigs and rx7's are small and lightweight. It doesn't take 800hp to make an rx7 fast. It takes race fuel with aggresive ports to make 500+rwhp normally.

The ENGINE is the key. The turbos, the tuning, are the other two parts, but without the engine you got nothing.

Stock engine on a FD is weak when compared to the 'Poopra's. A couple of pings, a couple of overheats and you are toast. No margin for stress.

Hanging a single on a stock engine is crazy. Why bother? Yeah, yeah, heat, yeah, yeah, less stress. What a waste, though, consider that you CAN squeeze near 400RWHP reliable power from then dar twin heaters.

So, if you changed your (worthwhile) topic to be related to straping a single on a built motor, I can play.

Hang a single, do it right, on a built engine, a well design fuel system, plenty of spark, good cool intake air density. Do it this way and you got as much life as the care and maintainence (which tuning is a part of) you put into the car. Run it like it's always stolen, you might get less.

If I would not have lost my water O-ring at 72K miles (60K of which at 15psi, daily, driven like it was stolen) I would still be on the stock setup.

And as "built" are you referring to simply a streetport and stronger seals? Or is there more to it?

I agree with the statement of how much HP is needed though, I do understand that the RX7 doesn't need nearly as much to be just as fast.

And I really love reading about how much HP can be pulled out of the stock twins!

I'm aiming for 350rwhp

There's not a whole lot to really build up on a rotary. The stock seals have been proven just as strong as anything else on the market. You could dowel pin the motor, but thats not necessary till....600rwhp? Actually there is nothing wrong with stock ports either, but a street port will help the function of a single turbo. Hell Ernie T ran low 11's on a stock port. 350rwhp is what you'd expect with the twins with all the other bolt ons, fuel system, and some more boost.

350hp with a a/r .84 exaust housing to4e would be your best bet for that much power and reliability to boot... your much more likely to blow your engine running the stock twins to 350 than you will be with a single turbo that doesn't have as much back pressure or 1/2 a ton of metal to heat soak. You shouldn't have any problem doing this on a stock block as well, but a slight intake and exaust port would help you get to 350 a little easier with less boost and also help with reliability as well... I'd also recomment upgrading the fuel pump even thought the stock pump should be able to provide enough fuel, but it's better to be safe than sorry for a measily $100...

If you want a comparible performance estimate, just divide the weight your FD by hp you want to get your hp to weight ratio and then do the same for the lead slead.. Oooops, I mean Supra...

Oh I already knew of this, but yea thanks for the good tips.

I had already planned on going 14psi But ONLY with fuel mods, ecu, FMIC, and all the necessary surrounding things to make it run right.

If i go the Blown/Rebuild route I am going to invest in the small street port.

Thanks for the info guys. Rock on Rx7.

one thing i really like about the rx7 over the pig i mean supra is the fact you only need 450-500 hp to run 10s in an rx7. In a supra you need close to a 1000. There is a joke i heard about supras, it was pretty funny and relates to this topic.

What do a 400rwhp supra, a 500rwhp supra and a 600rwhp supra have in common?

12 second time slips

so true..... but they actually have a supra in Sports compact Car that has 700hp that actually goes high 9's. And last week, i met this guy who allegedly had 700hp and his car did not move as fast as i expected a 700hp car.

Yea, I used to hear that a lot over at the forums. The excuse is sometimes bad driver, bad tires, bad launch....etc etc.

Anywho,...Do you have timeslips/sites as far as proof of these 450-500hp 10 second Rx7s?

I read (over in the ET forums with 10-13 second forum threads or whatever) that one guy was down to 11.1 using the stock twins...I would love a write-up/link to someone's car and info on how they reached 10's @ xxx hp in their FD.

Know of any?
