I am in the market for a new intercooler. I will be running a t66 or t70 turbo and am trying to find the best intercooler for this application. I do not have room for a large FMIC. Should I go with a large SMIC or get one of the water cooled intercoolers? I don't know much about the water cooled ones, but I know they are smaller and can be placed anywhere. I'm looking for pro's and con's from people who use either application. Thanks.

I've honestly never heard much about the water cooled intercoolers on our cars. A large smic should be sufficiant though.

Water cooled IC's are nice, but you have to make room for a pump, resivoir, and some people run a small radiator to cool it all...

First post.. yay..



I'm gearing up to buy my first FD December of this year and have been doing a lot of research on them, and the 13B in general, so that I have everything in order when I pick the car up. One thing I have noticed, and have been equally curious about, is why there seems to be such a lack of Water to Air ICs installed on RX7s.



Obviously the required component space is somewhat of a hinderance with this type of setup, but you could always run a small cell in the hatch area complete with a pump to take care of that. I'm just surprised this isn't done more, as it's fairly common on piston motors and much more efficent than Air to Air. I have been considering giving it a shot on mine, but if someone provides a good enough reason not to, I'll just go with the V-Mount.

I've been told that the water cooled are only good for drag racing. You only get cooling for a short time than you have to let the system cool off. Great on the track, but not what I would use on the street if it's true. Any one else hear something like that?

Well it is true that as your water temp increases, it would be become less efficent. Only way around that on the street is to continuously add ice to your tank / resovoir. Running another radiator for the water flow would not be too plausible on an FD due to the fact you've all ready got 2 oil coolers up front (depending on model and / or upgrades of course), along with an IC and main radiator. So yeah, if your planning on using the car on the street, I suppose Air - Water would not be the best option. Unless, of course, you don't mind stopping at 7-11 every 30 minutes for a fresh bag of ice

That is the second largest problem with air to water.



The AIT will only be as cold as your water temp. That water is getting constantly heated so on the street it is not such a great idea.



First problem is the space issue.



I think Turbomark7 (or something similar) had a air to water setup

Thanks for the info. Now to find a big ol' smic to stick in there. I will be running a T70 with street ported primaries and secondaries. Any suggestions. I had a HUGE front mount, but the piping couldn't be run around the giant radiator. Who makes the best SMIC for the money? I've seen some kits that are just as expensive as an FMIC kit. What's the deal? All I would need is the core w/tanks. Piping and brackets will get done when the turbo gets done. How much should that run? I'm serious. After shopping the net for a few hours I realize that someone needs to give me $6000.00 free and clear. I am such a cheap ***.

some missnomers but I wont go into that cause I got jumped before. Myself,BDC FastFreddy,turboMark7 all have the water. It takes up little room.

I always advise people to go with a custom front mount (avoid the big name brands , they are VERY expensive) , make sure its of a decent design and spend the rest of money on a good water injection system , you'll get much better cooling than any intercooler can do on its own.
