I love that coating (HPC?)!
Mmmmmmm.... |
exhaust is a black ceramic, compressor housing, intake and UIM/LIM, misc brakets and such are a wrinkle black powder coat...good up to 1000 degree F.
|
Sounds/looks expensive, haha.
|
^not when you do it all yourself, ha! hence the title DIY. Everything from engine build, turbo kit, WI, coatings (except cermic), wiring Haltech, and tuning.

hehe, but yea im working on my own as well, everything done myself except for paint and porting. kevin. |
Well lets see some pics boys...this thread isn't about me. I like seeing pictures!

That matte black finish looks hott! nice work!
|
That **** looks hot, especially the uim/lim. I like the blackness, it's not the usual BLING BLING going on.
Question though: How efficient is that intercooler? Would you be going FMIC later on? Unless you have it ducted straight to it. Looks good though. |
Thanks! efficient IC...hmmm, I'm sure it's the bottleneck in my set-up. FMIC? no, I don't like the looks of them...I wanted a sleeper with everything under the hood. The IC would work better if the fans weren't blowing directly on it. I do have a sprayer and water injection to help with cooling. I might try a VMIC someday...but as you can see, I have and air pump I have to fit under there too.
GAWD do I need something to cover that rustyass turbine housing!!!! |

My Project Thread
cool project man, I'd like to check it once its up! |
Good to see more people DIY with fds , im a self employed fabricator i did all the work on my car. Rebuilt the engine, fabricated stainless steel exhaust system including manifold, and wastegate 50mm used 62-1 turbonetics turbo, apexi intercooler, trust bov apexi pfc which i tuned. Use a cusco twinplate clutch, hotwire earthed ht leads, ngk R6725-105 plugs. I also did the plumbing all the brackets, the carbon heat sheilds etc etc no one works on my car but me.
|
I was going to ask, If I send you a template, could you make some CF shields for me...but looks like you are not in the states, haha!
Cool car! |
Doing your own work is awesome!
I wish there were enough of us on here to share exhaust manifold designs...you know, figure out what's best. |

Making up carbon stuff not that hard. I went to a fibreglass supplier and got one square meter of woven carbon mat and a small container of epoxy resin.
I masked up all around the area i was going to work in. I packed all around the area i wanted to carbon up with hard foam then covered with many layers of plastic wrap trying to keep area as smooth as possible. I made sure to do this to a larger area than i was going to cover with resin and dished the lowest areas so it would pool at the lowest point and not spill over on to any thing. It is important to make the plastic as firm as possible so it wont change shape when resin is applied. If sheild is to be fastened make sure this is included in mold. Once the area is masked and molded area is made and taped secure lay woven mat over the mold and mark out the shape to cut it to. Make sure to allow extra say 1" to 2" all the way around , to be trimed off once resin has hardened. Depending on how heavy woven mat is cut out 2-4 of these shapes. Use masking tape to hold the first mat in place (around the edges) mix up a small cup of resin. Use a 1" paint brush and cover mat with resin, try not to put to much pressure on mat so weave is not seperated. Once covered well carefully place the next mat over the first, the resin should hold the mat in place. Cover with resin then mat then resin. Cover the last last mat with resin. You can roll out any air bubbles if you purchase a fibreglass roller but usually not needed. Now just leave it for resin to harden up. Once its cured take out , peel the plastic off the back, and trim it up to the shape you want. |
Sometimes the resin will end up with a smooth surface finish, but often it will sink leaving the surface with woven texture. If you want a smooth finish there a two ways to get it . one: Once lay up is complete and out of car you can apply an extra coat or two of resin , very easy to get not so good looking runs but if coats are not to thick but enough to wet out , easy. You do have to let each coat cure, depending on resin up to 24 hours.
Two: once item is cured and removed from car sand item down with 180 grit it is ok to cut into the mat, just not to far. Build up with 2k clear coat, car paint. Once it has hardened flat it down with 240 , build it up again , then repeat with 800. After 800 and clear item should be looking good. Good luck. |
This an exhaust manifold i made the one in my car is the same but the wastegate is different, i made the valve and the bottom part out of stainless. I will take a pic later if your interested.
It's not that I have a "bad" tire... Pzero Corsa's have a treadwear rating of 60...don't really want to take long trips with these tires. More or less only for AutoXing, the less being weekend cruises or something like the Tail of the Dragon.
I thought you were in NC?
