20b Single Turbo Ideas?
#4
I am also interested in what others have done with a 20B. I am currently looking to place an ex-Camaron Worth Bonzat TT 20B into my vintage IMSA GTO car (the Corona Lite car) and am going to have a hell of a time getting the intake system under the hood! Since I am looking for an endurance racing set up, not a drag racing set up, I won't be looking for MAX HP. Should I stay with the TT, or is a single turbo workable?
I also have a Mandeville built 20B short block as a spare back up, so I'm willing to push the envelope somewhat

The car was built by Joe Carr in Petaluma originally for the Trans-Am series in 1988, but they wouldn't allow Rotory power so the car was then made legal for IMSA GTU. Originally sponsored by Corona, the twin cars raced at portland, Del Mar and Kansas in 1989, then many IMSA events in 1990 and 91. In 1992 the original owner (John Daly of San Diego), sold them to Gary Biehl (current crew chief for an ALMS Porsche Team). They ran a few more events in 93 and 94. My car was then sold to Ralph Thomas of North Carolina who campaigned her at Sebring and Daytona until 1996. Several well known Mazda drivers were part of those teams. Car never placed well. In 1997 the car was retired. I bought her last year out of Roger Mandevilles shop with a new 20b short block installed.

What are your goals power level wise? You can spool a pretty decent sized turbo easily with a 20B. I would run a GT42R or something similar I can get a good sized undivided T6 turbine housing for it if interested. Should run nice and make good power easily. I would definitely drop the twins.

Cool history on the Mazda. Did Lance Stewart drive it in the early 90's? It is starting to look familiar but the Corona livery does not come to mind. I have a guy J.R. at Just Racing putting my 1993 20b single turbo together. He's been doing Mazdas forever but has always shied away from publicity. It's going to get me out on autox (at least) and my 14 and 11 yo sons MIGHT get to drive it if they act right when they are old enough. Maybe some track time will follow..probably have to track it once my license is gone!!! Hoping for 500rwp @ 10 pounds and run it on the spring for the street. I'll post some pics soon.
