[quote name='inanimate_object' date='Jul 31 2005, 08:49 PM']Haha that reminds me of primary school when we used to flick yogurt onto the ceiling with spoons and see if it would land on anyone a few minutes later I was a bad kid.

It would be helpful if one of the cunning linguists on the forum would provide the etymological origins of the word catsup, or ketchup, and explain why both spellings seem equally pervasive.

Okay, okay. I'll do it.

According to Webster's,

Main Entry: ketch·up

Pronunciation: 'ke-ch&p, 'ka-

Function: noun

Etymology: Malay kechap fish sauce

: a seasoned pureed condiment usually made from tomatoes

Catsup is listed as a variant of "ketchup", so I guess the more proper spelling is ketchup.

Yes, I know. But don't go overboard. A small cash donation will be sufficient.

There is an episode of the Simpsons that explains it flawlessly.

Mr. Burns goes shopping, and hes holding a bottle of "Castup" and "Ketchup" trying to figure out the difference. It's funny. Yeah....funny!

It was one of the plastic bottles with the tiny hole in the lid. I had the cap closed, but it had so much build up in it that it slung open... lol.
