Mate just bought a Rx8 auto, is already asking about more hp. I know little about the standard spec at this point. Auto has less power than the manual anyway

Well mazda said that the last second emmisions change is what cost them some power. From the sounds of that, if you remove the cat, and free up the exhaust some elsewhere you should get that power back.
