mazda recomends plugs every 30k in a rx8, i believe that is hawgwash as i have been replacing them sometimes every 15k on most of my customers cars. your car needed a cat, that was part of the recall. the other is a compression test and vacum/map test also a print out of the MODE 6 data for the air fuel switch time and O2 switch time.

as far as your compression goes, what the hell test are they doing. when you compression test the car it needs to be at full operating temp, and spining at the proper rpm. there is no RATIO so to say on a cold start. if they tested it on a cold engine the test would not be accurate .

One thing i have found works really really well and is part of the recall is MAZDA ZOOM ZOOM cleaner. yes its called ZOOM ZOOM cleaner. basicly its a cemical in a arisal can , similar to seafoam , that when used properly cleans most carbon out of the combustion chambers as well as seal slots ect.... For thoughs of you with rx-8s that complain of lack of power, go to your dealer request the ZOOM ZOOM cleaner and new plugs to be installed before you assume your engine is failed. 9 times out of 10 compression has been restored after this service.

we had one once, that came in running on 1 rotor, compression tested in the 5's (spec is what 8? 9?). we called mazda, they had use replace the coils (you had a bad cat, this one had bad coils), we put an ignition system in it, ran it, rechecked compression and it was now good.

ites really weird, but i think the moral of the story is that if the engine isnt running right, it might test with low compression.

now that its running fine, i would not worry about it. i would also consider using a different dealership next time. i dunno where you live, but the dealership i used to work at, we replaced 1 rx8 engine in 5 years. this is much better than the piston engine cars, we were doing 2 of the v6 6 engines a month....
