Actually it wont fit the series 4 threads. So anyone with a FC needs to use a series 5 shifter.

Well, let me fully specify:

I cannot find any information about the thread size on 79-80, and 81-83 shifters. I have found that Mazdatrix sells a short shifter for the 81-83 though, so I will try to contact them and ask about the thread size. I do know the thread size from 84-88 was the same, and the shifter that Mazdatrix sells for the S4, will also fit a 84-85. So heres an informal chart:

89-95 = No modifications needed

84-88 = Requires a 89-91 shifter: Drop in replacement

81-83 = Still trying to determine thread size

79-80 = No information on these whatsoever

Miata & Rx8 require no nodifications.

Ok, a little more info. (where the hell is the edit function?)

The thread size 12x1.25 is used from 88 all the way back to 79 (according to Mazdatrix).

Im still unsure if the 89-92 shifters will fit 79-83 models though. Atleast we know their thread size now.
