Are you going Fuel injection or Carb?

Just a FYI, the engine that was in a cosmo was called a 13b-re. There are minute differences between that motor and the 13b-rew. Both are great platforms to start from.

A couple questions:

Are you going to keep it turbo?

What are you planning on running for an ECU?

By running a standalone it really eliminates a lot of the sensors. By going with a single turbo it eliminates 99% of the vacuum lines that I am sure that you are already familiar with.

Give some more specs on the build. And what you have already. Long block?

Oh man good luck with that. I purposely chose an old style carbed 13B for ease of use and lack of complication. I didn't want so many points of failure on something that's going to get thrashed offroad. There's no need to port it, which will retain all the low end, and since it's already going to have twice the HP of a typical 1600, which is what's in there now, I'd do myself a disservice if I ported it. Plus the current bug tranny will work until I find a good deal on a bus 3 or 5 rib and the CVs etc. So I don't even have to beef up the tranny, unless I want to - you will NEED to.

The good points of my setup:

simple wiring (carb)

simple cooling (NA)

simple fuel system (carb)

cheap trans (NA)

I'm not trying to discourage you. I'm just saying that these great deals people come across sometimes work out, but if you custom build something specifically for such a project, it often works better.

If you could do it all over, I'd recommend a 6 port NA fuel injected engine, preferebly a GSL-SE since they had the most low end torque, but a 2nd gen engine will work too. Then install it with all the sensors and stock ECU. See how it runs. Then pull it, rebuild, reinstall, break it in etc. Then upgrade the ECU to a standalone and learn how to tune. The end result you want is excellent driveability and tons of torque. Don't worry about HP or high RPM because there is more than enough in a rotary, and plenty for this kind of a project.

I recommend EFI over carb for a project like this because the parts to carb a 13B really don't exist anymore. All you can get carbwise these days are aftermarket, and there goes your low end driveability. So go EFI. It will give you at least as much driveability as the old stock parts from the '70s, but is far more adjustable and much more power is available. Plus it can even surpass the carb setup I have in mind with very little effort. I just have my hands full with plenty of other projects, one of which is an EFI engine out of a Cosmo by the way. Since I had the intake parts and the engine parts available for a high torque simple carbed setup, it just made sense to go carb in the baja.

Good luck, oh and read a lot.

I put a Stock turbo II engine in my Porsche 911. If you have the complete wiring harness and ECU from the cosmo there are really only four or five other wires to hook up. You will NEED the factory service manual for this.

After that engine blew up at 130 MPH on the track I replaced it with a built TII motor with a Haltech ECU. Trust me the wiring is very simple with a stadalone ECU. You will also have more tuning options (more power).

In my experience the used JDM motor really needs to be rebuilt. The one I blew "only has 50.000 miles". Too bad I believed the guy who sold it to me. I learned an expensive lesson.

It's better to rebuild a running engine than a broken one. Lesson learned.
