Hi i have an 86 base and I just finished taking my engine apart and started to clean the parts. I need a new rear housing and rotor i think...Can i build the rotor back up with a weld and machine it back to normal?...I have no cash and access to a machine shop for free so any thing i could do to make this car go again. Also i plan to port the intakes and exhaust anything else i can do to tweak..also can i weld the housings and hone them out? or mill them? and as far as the spacers go can i make my own if my v spacer doesnt make the tollerences ?..can i get away with replacing some of the broken springs from the front rotor with good ones from the back and just build the back rotor up..ie: new springs apex seals...i would like to do this for a couple of hundred bucks....thanks for all help...

take pics of the rotor where it is messed up, get the factory service manual as well as the atkins video on how to rebuild your engine, if you need any more info, and clean those damn rotors! haha good luck

tewquick

I can save you from one headache and tell you not to try and weld your rotors. That a no-no and won't work for a number of reasons. One being the fact that you will change the delicate balance of the rotor and that will throw it off when installed. To get it rebalanced correctly will proably costy more than a good replacment.

If you want to really do this build-up cheap why don't you pick-up an extra parts motor(same year. make and model). If it's non-turbo you should be able to pick one up pretty cheap and with all the spare parts you should be able to get one up and running fairly good.

I have the videos and two manuals but thanks for the info about welding i have found some good used ones i think im gunna buy. Also gunna get the new apex seals from rotary aviation i started to port my intakes on friday. I wanted to ask if i should replace this also its cracked right through no leaking but doesnt look too strong..

Those front covers almost always have those lines in them. Don't worry about it.



I would be more concerned with the state of your rotor housings, rotors and all your seals. If in doubt, replace. If you cut corners, you'll regret it. Matching side seals to corner seals is very important in these motors.

Andy is right on both points.

The front cover is normal (I think it has something to do with the casting process), but you really do want to pay close attention to your clearences i.e. Rotors, Rotor Housings, Side Housings, Bearings and all Seals. You want to first get the work-shop manual so you can have a refrence for proper specs. Some parts can be reused,others can not. These spec's are going to help you figure out which are which.
