Of most interest with WI is that you can lean the mixture back to best power mix(13:1) with the obvious HP gains that come with that.
The combustion dynamics are most interesting if you study them. Water is most definately NOT inert in the combustion process. |

I don't have numbers for a rotary I'm afraid. The fundamental research suggested up to 30% more power by allowing more boost, or 30% less fuel used. But that was on a 27 litre merlin engine. However the fundamentals are the same.
In terms of power lost by running too rich without any WI, standard text books put it at around 5%. Not huge, but on a 400HP engine thats 20HP, and some people will pay $$$ for that 20HP. |

We have had great success for the last 3 years with our Rx-7 and our water injection kits. You can also lean to lean of stoich, as well. Volvo is using EGR in lieu of water injection to be able to run stoichiometric mixtures under boost. EGR and water injection do essentially the same thing, only water injection doesn't use up as much combustion space, yet EGR never runs out of working fluid. |
