Just as we were closing up the shop, I reassembled the front of the motor to check end-play... .1120 wtf????



I must have assembled incorrectly.... :(



I'm using all new parts: both bearings, thrust washer, and thrust plate. I'm reusing the old 11-5011 plate (the big one in the middle that bolts down), and I'm reusing the old "V" spacer just to get a measurement. I assembled per Turrentine's excellent vid. The only thing that isn't clear is which way the chamfer on the thrust plate (rearmost) faces... Need to check the FSM for that.



Maybe the big plate in the middle didn't seat. I'll disassemble the front of the motor tomorrow and re-do.



Ideas and/or experiences appreciated...

the thrust plate chamfer goes toward the rear, or it "lines up" with the fillet on the e shaft. i dunno about the end play maybe you need a different spacer? i measure the endplay by feel so i'm not sure what the measurement is

Did you lap the side plates?

You are sure the thrust washer is on the lip? What is your eccentric shaft "protrusion"?

I was in a hurry, and followed the picture in the Factory Parts Manual instead following my notes. The assembly order shown in the FPM is incorrect - it shows the bearing going on first -ack!-.



Fortunately nothing got bent. Tonight, I disassembled and reassembled Viola! .0025 endplay!



The oil pump surrendered quietly, and only the tiny little key for the drive

gear offered resistance.

Here it is on the stand at the shop. No front cover yet... I LOST my

oil pump drive gear nut (probably find it at the bottom of the

washing machine tonight) and had to make a special trip to Ace Hardware

- ugh!.

Steve nice pics. But what the hell is the shop owner doing to the engine???

hehehe, it cool... He's just messing with me. He saw me clicking picks, and picked up the

biggest, tool he could find and stepped into the picture with a very serious look

on his face. We all roared, laughing. Just above and to the right of the engine,

there is a series of huge adjustable wrenches. He picked up one of those and started

to pose. Luckily I ran out of film...
