What is a simple, inexpensive way to test for fuel dilution? Particuliarly when you are breaking in/tuning a new engine? Milage is not a reliable indicator; Commercial Lab tests are relatively expensive and take TIME.

 

How accurate do you need? My oil always smells like gas.





I would imagine there's a litmus strip type test available out there somewhere? Specific gravity test?

could you do something so seperate the oil from the fuel? the sniff test works ok

 

take out the dipstick look at teh color if its black and watery its got too much fuel.

u can tell the consitency of a fuel diluted oil and fresh oil just from the way it sits on a dipstick

and rubbing it between your fingers or even teh way it spreads on a napkin.

oil should be changed right before a tune.

 

Some one told me along time ago that std Oil won't light easly with a lighter where as if it has fuel in it then it will burn? I don't know if it works i've never tried it??



The More Ovious one would be do a Viscosity test as fuel with thin the oil but of course you'd have to know what it was to start with and the correct Din Cup.



Would be just easyer to change the oil. LOL

 

It'll work, trust me. A mixture of 2-stroke oil, and gasoline is a deadly combonation, asking for disaster. Nigh impossible to put out easily (I think that's an oxymoron).

 

My is pure gasoline. I guess that is what happens when you are at 150,000 miles and 17 years old.



I've been making sure to put fresh oil for each autox event and time trial event.



Else I think the oil won't hold up.

 

Keep a running account of idle oil pressure. The pumps are too small and as fuel dilutes the oil, the viscosity goes down as well as idle oil pressure. In the very worst case, normal peak oil pressure might decay as well.

For those with a sense of smell the oil will smell like gasoline. I cannot smell much of anything, but I have been told that.
