Setting Up Distributor And Timing

Well, I have my engine back together and installed in the car. [Photos available if you're interested]
Now I need to set up the dizzy. Its a 13B with a weber setup.
Is there a step-by-step that takes you throught the process?
The FM is not that clear and I think the relevant section assumes you haven't had the engine apart.
I did align the dizzy shaft and notch before installing but what about the front pulley and timing?
Any help would be much appreciated.

I lined up the dot with the raised edge on the shaft, and put the mark on the pulley wheel at the needle on the front cover.
I tried to start it but without much success. In fact, it flattened the battery!
How do I know the pulley wheel (with the timing marks) is in the right position on the eshaft? It can be in one of four positions.
Do the rotors have to be in a certain position?

Sounds like you might have the pre-86 engine timing pulley. That pulley could be dis-assembled and re-assembled in four different ways. The 86 and later engines could only be assembled one way. Same problem with 12A timing pulleys. Since you might have a timing wheel that was probably removed to get detailed and painted, when it was re-installed the proper timing alignment was not done. Tell me if i'm correct. If I am Ill hep you find top dead center then you could re-install the distributor or like you aussies like to call them "DIZZY"

Yes, it is a pre-86. The pulley is held by four small screws and can be installed in any of the four positions. It has markings on it.
When I disassembled the engine I did mark the spot on the pulley but did not make a corresponding mark on the front cover.
I then polished the pulley on a wire wheel (B I G mistake - I forgot about the marking)
Any help would be appreciated.

You should be able to look at the the key on eccentric shaft. It should be facing near (but not exactly) the 9:00 position for TDC on the #1 rotor. Find that and put your pulley on with the two timing markings facing up. Just set your dizzy rotor to L1, and drop it in. Set timing accordingly.
Or you could just try each side of the pulley, but it's kind of a pita if you ask me...

Here's some photos of the engine pre-assembled to check that I had all the correct nuts and bolts in their right positions.
the timing pulley has markings for 0 through 20 to 40.
The only way I can safely get the key on the e-shaft at 9:00 position is to take the pulley bolt out (I assume).
When you say 'set the dizzy rotor to L1', does this correlate with the dot and marking on the dizzy shaft, or what?
I've tried starting the engine again today but without much success.
