did they use carb cleaner as coolant? i have seen many regular 13bs with 100k+ miles on them with less rust then that in teh coolant passages

Man, some people just dont think things through. Does anyone know when those pics were taken? Why they were taken? No. So untill you do this conversation is just dumb. For all you goofballs know that engine could be off an enigne dyno that just made that poor little engine run for 2 weeks at 6k. Who knows the dyno operator may have used water and after it ran they could have just left the water in it for another 2 weeks. So untill ya know,your all gonna sound like you "think" you just saw ET.

You're completely ignoring the meat of the subject, the lack of plating on the coolant nipple.



And yes, the source of the photographs is known. It's from the first rx-8 in new zealand according to MREC, I'm sure we could contact them for more details if you would like.



If you're implying I didnt think it through, perhaps you should practice what you preach. The purpose of the post is to query RX-8 owners and other people who might have access to renesis engines for confirmation and their own observations. I think that is pretty clear in my post, and since that is the point, obviously I'm not jumping to conclusions. If you are referring to the description of the thread, please note that it is in the form of a question not a statement.

The internet is so full of disinformation....So we need to know what kind of coolant this engine was running and what kind of coolant the RX8 is supposed to have. Also, how many miles on that engine in the pics. Also any storage information that would explain why the rust was there. Without that info your just looking at a pic of a rusty endplate. Also, not one of the 50+ engines where I have taken the hose off that nipple had a plated nipple. They all look just like that. And they are like 10 years old. Just sayin there is not nearly enough info about that pic to say that this is poor quality control.

Galvanization wears off. It's a coated surface over metal, to prevent rust from appearing for as long as the galvanization can withstand element and wear. Go back into the thread pengaru linked and look at the image he presented of the furrel inside the cast water pump housing. The galvanization has worn off in over 15 years of being exposed to air/coolant, and the furrel that was inside, and unexposed, still has a galvanized surface. I have two that look exactly the same as that. Or, go pull a few vac lines off your vaccum rack (assuming you own an FC). The rubber line that goes overtop of the vaccum rack nipples are a perfect seal over the galvanized surface, so the galvanization will still be there.

Apparently you did not see the photographs of _my_ end plate, which clearly illustrates the plating on the nipple.



50+ engines eh? Ever take a picture of one? Seeing as you're so quick to discredit things why don't you put up with some factual evidence? Show us some of these nippled that are not plated.



I would love for us to discover that my S5 end plate is the only one of it's kind where mazda has plated the nipple.

After looking at paul yaw's photographs of the renesis he is modifying, I found this one which has the nipple in question visible:





looks like the MREC photo to me (dull grey).





What does it mean? nothing? something? well, regardless, it's more proof of a possible discrepancy.
