Rotor Bearings... Replace in pairs?
#1
I remember reading on mazdaspeedmotorsports.com tech section, their guideline was, "Don't replace the stat gear bearings or the rotors bearings unless you have to."
I had a closer look at one of the rotor bearings (this is the front rotor), and the bearing is scored. However the bore scope can't really measure the difference between the un score and scored part.
What is your opinion? replace the one bearing? Replace both bearings? Live with it?

that looks like you should replace it. mazdaspeed motorsports probably says not to unless necessary because the gear or rotor can get damaged during bearing replacment if your not careful also an older bearing will be "broken in" and you definetly wont have a spun bearing.- atkins sells the presses to due this or you can send your parts out...i have had good and bad experiences sending stuff out for new bearings (i.e. a certain rotary shop to remain unnamed managed to completely ruin a set of rotors i sent them and then proceeded to play dumb when i confronted them about it)
save your time and aggravation and go get a bearing press from Harbor freight and get'r done
(im jsut getting my own press next time i need new bearing myself!)
you figure most shops will charge 20-25 /bearing for install
for the price of 4 bearing installs (basically one engne, doing both gears and both rotors) for 100 bucks you can buy a baring presss anyways!
of course the tools are an extra 60 bucsk but still you rebuild two engines and youve already made your $ back~!

Changing the bearings is not a problem at all. I have the mazda tools. I also have a arbor press both at work and at the local college I can use.
Btw what do you mean about breaking in the bearing? These are journal bearings, they are never meant to make contact with anything. A film of oil pressurized oil suspends the eshaft lobe and prevents it from touching the inside of the bearing. There is nothing to be broken in!

you're a rich engineer! replace the rotors, they come with new bearings....
you certainly dont have to replace bearings in pairs, but i think you might as well.
I should've just bought a mazda reman.

I used a 2 ton arrbor press that was bolted to a big heavy work bench.
I've seen them at bankruptcy tool/die/machine shop auctions for 70 bucks. I couldn't pick one up myself and I had no way of getting it home.
