The FD torrington bearings are a different size and physically dont fit on the earlier stat gears.

then maybe my "FD" rebuild kit actually was for a TII. cause i used them.

If that's true, you would've noticed the differences in ID (inner diameter) of the FD needle thrust bearings to the FC ones -- the thrust spacer (that slides over the crankshaft where the thrust plate goes) on the FD is considerably thicker than the FC one.
