Is Porting Really That Simple?

well, i've been doing some research on porting, and it seems like it's too easy! Are you people telling me all I have to do is pull my engine apart, buy a template and some good dremel bits and grind away? I plan to do a streetport on my 79 12a sometime in the future and was just wondering if it is just that easy.

Not in my opinion they're not.

for me, the Dremel is enough to do the intakes. i've been having a hard time with it on the exhausts.
i should be receiving a die grinder any day now, so i'll be able to make an informed decision on how much better die grinder works on the exhausts.

Grinding away metal on a housing easy. Getting the right shape, runner transition, and finish is the hard part. Templates only show you what size to open them up to. A template can't show how to do the real work that actually makes the most difference. It is possible to make a port larger and have it flow worse.
You will need a die grinder with some fairly expensive bits to do a nice cut. These generally aren't available at the hardware store. I've got some nice carbids and non ferrous bits that I use for various things. I only use a Dremel to go back and do finish work. It is possible to port an engine with only a dremel but it is also possible to cross the Atlantic in a rowboat. It's slow and difficult.
