How far down can you machine irons?

I just got finished pulling and tearing down the engine in this old gt3 car to see what sort of shape it was in. Idealy I will be able to find an older fb with a blown engine and a straight body to stuff the drivetrain out of this gt3 car into.



Initially when the engine was in the car it was fairly evident that the engine was full of various kinds of **** from having sat so long and it looked like it may have lost a water seal at some point.





It came with a variety of pleasant goodies...





Well, upon tearing it down the insides looked pretty well fucked. There was no mechanical damage, it looks like the water seals may have just been leaking considering the porting had removed a section of the water seals. It had also been sitting for some amount of time, around seven years.



The rotors have surface rust on them and a variety of other crap, but they look like they should clean up just fine. Incidentally, they were fitted with carbon seals. My main concern is the center iron, as the rear portion of it was fairly badly rusted as you can see in those pictures above. I scraped it off with a razor blade but the metal underneath seems to be fairly soft. How far down can you reasonably machine these irons? It shouldnt nee more than 1mm of material removed for it to be kosher again. I know that it will lose the nitride coating, but even rebuilt this car wouldnt see more than 2k miles a year. So the question is, is this thing completely fucked, or is there some measure of hope?

According to the RB catalog/tech book you can remove material down to the following thicknesses.



Front: 1.568"

Middle: 1.955"

Rear: 2.355"



Lynn has made some posts about extreme cutting of housings. Basically from what he has said you can cut until they hit the e-shaft lobes. Do a search for the real scoop.



Clean those ports up while it's apart. They look awful.

Dont forget you still need to bolt manifolds on, so dont cut too much or you will be ovaling holes and port matching.

The amount of water damage you've got makes me think the plates are dead. I tore down a similarly water damaged GT3 engine and it's going to get a set of side plates.



If the iron is soft enough to scrape it away with a fingernail, it's time to get another one.

If the engine is a 12A, I can sell you one of my plates for cheap. Yeah, they need to be ground down some (minor rusting), but they're a lot better than what you have right there.

For best results buy new . Then the ports can be cut cleaner .
