Help Me! S5 n/a into an 1983 fb
what kind of mods am i going to have to do to get it to fit??? also i wanted to do a weber carb...... is it possible. what kind of block off plates do i need. any advice helps. ive done engine r&r before but never this kind of swap. thanks, cody
It's not much of a swap, it's more of a bolt in type deal. You need to modify the engine mount bracket or purchase one pre-altered, a GSL-SE oil pan, and possibly the oil pickup although I do not recall them being different than 12A stuff.
You will re-use the 12A's front cover and distributor. The flywheel is engine-specific but the clutches interchange freely. Water pump/housings interchange but the FC unit is aluminum so keep that, but you'll want to use the FB water outlet. Since you're starting with an '83, you will need to either install a GSL-SE oil cooler, adapt the FC oil cooler, or install a short radiator and 12A oil cooler. You could also have a longer oil line made for the water-oil cooler on the FB engine, but that'd be a lot of work to use crap.
Depending on which Weber carb you use, you will either need no blockoff plates because you are replacing the entire intake manifold, or you will need an ACV plate because you are reusing the stock lower. Of course, you will be wanting to use a header.
