I'm tearing down a GSL-SE engine and when I got the flywheel off, I noticed it looked a little different than I was expecting. I checked here http://www.mazdatrix.com/faq/flywheel.htm and the number 326 means it's supposed to be for an '86-'88 NA. It's got 3mm apex seals, well five out of six anyway.

I've gotta get the front cover off and see which front counterweight is on there.

From what I can remember, this engine didn't seem to vibrate back when it was running.

The front counterweight looks different.

I got a picture of the front counterweight. Can anyone tell me which years this style was used?

I finally got back to work on this thing. The rotors are defintely '74-'85 and I believe the engine has never been opened. The rear stationary bearing is showing a very large amount of copper.

looks like someone put the wrong flywheel on it when they did the clutch?

Looks that way. The pilot bearing seal was also missing so grease got on the disc. The front rotor lost one apex seal and the rotor housing is pretty chewed up. Both rotor housings are missing some chrome. There is very little step wear on the side plates though, and the front stationary bearing looks ok.

I was planning on using the GSL-SE flywheel on my Cosmo auto to manual swap. Looks like I'll have to find a different flywheel.

Wrong flywheel = vibration ( you may not feel it ) = broken apex seal

Jeff, I went through similar issues recently swapping flywheels around on my car. GSL-SE rotors are 1.5 lbs heavier than the S4 n/a rotors. Flywheels must match the rotors used in the engine. I had noticable vibration when using the wrong flywheel. Rumour has it premature rotor bearing failure will result. To identify flywheels, or check rotor weights, go here:

Rotor bearings look fine. Both stationary bearings are well into the copper.
