ok so today i tryed to take a flywheel off and i broke two of my 1/2" breaker bars thats 120bucks



i have taken at least 10 off before with out this carnage,,



reason for removing it was to get it turned it has a little surface rust.

i was wondering if i could get away with 200grit and sanding it instead lol

Just smoothing the surface is all that is required. Sanding will be fine.



Buy breaker bars at Sears. Garanteed for life. Buy broken Sears Craftsman tools at yard sales, and keep your broken Sears Craftsman tools. Take them to Sears and get new stuff for free.

everyone else thought i was crazy about the sanding part...

 

If your breaker bars are $150 each, I bet they are warranted. I usually use a HF cheap junk one, and that's even got a guarantee. I broke it using a 12 foot long pipe on the end... so that's kinda impressive that you broke two of them. I think it was on the 2 1/4" bolt on the flywheel of my 13b now that I think about it...



if you do decide to sand it, take it to 400 or 800, make sure you use a sanding block as it needs to be FLAT, and do it in a crosshatch pattern, or a random pattern if you are spinning the flywheel. It should look like a cylinder after you hone it.



If you are lazy, you can also pull the plugs, and disconnect the injectors (or ECU), then use the starter to spin the motor, and hold a random orbital sander against the flywheel. It will act as a really cheap lathe if you can get your hands into the car. You might need one of the trigger turnover tools to do this.



Another option which is possibly more work is that you put a crap clutch in it for 100 miles, and let the clutch clean off the rust. Then go put your new clutch in it afterwords. If you choose to do this method you will have to clean off the inside of the bell housing.

 

every time I've ever put new wheel bearings in a vehicle I've used emery cloth to sand down the damage to the spindle and never had an issue. needed to put a spacer on for the bearing a couple times but for a flywheel with just a little surface rust sandpaper will be fine. I wouldn't suggest going too crazy on it though with low grit paper making dips in the surfaced area. 200 grit should work great though

the engine was out on the ground with no pan on stuff proped around it to help stop it from movin plus my buddy 200pounds on top then i use a alternator bracket and attach the flywheel to the block has worked on 10 engines this time it broke the friggin casting off we have one less tranny bold hole lol





the first breaker bar was from sears cost 60$ i broke it with 6ft bar

the second one was from sk tools was 75$ i broke it with 2ft extention lol and yes there both warrented if they dont have pipe/pounding marks.the craftsman is beat up and the sk i had put lots of ducktape on for that reason.
