I've been reading here and looking at web pages to figure out how these engines work, I have a pretty good understanding of what all is going on inside of these things now. So its time to get my hands dirty and rebuild one. Planing on pulling the engine out of a second gen RX7. Really just kinda woundering if theres anything major I should avoid or look for when picking the engine..

And also, what is Fd, FF and all the other things like that mean?

You might want to pick up the Bruce Turrentine rebuild video. I wish I would have before I rebuilt mine. It's supposed to be real good and thorough. I'd also pick up a Hayne's manual and/or download the Factory Service Manual for reference. Aside from that, all you'll need is a rebuild kit, metric tools, a torque wrench, elbow grease, time, and patience. Read this forum, especially the FAQ section. There is a wealth of knowledge that has been shared on this board that you won't find in any book.

FD3S or FD shortened is the chassis code for the 3rd Generation RX-7, '93+. FC3S is second generation. FF is usually the abbreviation I see for a Front-wheel drive, front-engined car. I don't know what it would have to do with the RX-7?

thanks for the info, just ordered the video and will go hunting for a Hayne's manual this weekend.

seems like i have everything but the engine and rebuild kit now. are there any kits you would suggest? i've seen a basic kit for about $500 and a master kit for around $870 (both are on the same site as the video was)

Rotary Aviation and Atkins Rotary both have reasonably priced rebuild kits. I'm not sure what was included in the master kit that you're talking about. I would replace all of the rotor seals and springs though and oil O rings and inserts. You'll also need a gasket set. Don't replace your engine bearings unless you need to. The first time I rebuilt my engine, I replaced my bearings and I didn't really need to. Most of the experienced engine builders around here say that a good used bearing is better than a new one. I bought my kit from Atkins Rotary, and had great experience with them. They were real nice on the phone, and more than willing to answer any questions I had after I bought the kit. I've heard good things about Rotary Aviation as well. You'll probably find that the rebuild kits come with some extra things like oil thermopellet replacement, pilot bearing, thrust bearings, and a tube of Hylomar. Those other things are nice to replace while you have the engine out, and the Hylomar is good for sealing the housings together at the bottom and other gaskets and things. No matter where you get the kit, you're probably looking at around $900-1000 for everything you need.
