hey guys,

i recently bought a 1st gen with no motor. Along with it came 2 12A engines. I have no info as to whether they run or not, so im trying to find out without completely installing them.

To start things off i tried turning the engines main pully by hand and its frozen. next i put some atf in the sparkplug holes and let it sit. 30 mins later i tried turning it with a ratchet and it broke free. it has the hissing noises when the rotor passes the sparkplug holes from releasing air.

Next, i took the exh manifold off to take a look at the seals. to my suprise they are all in tack. I put some atf in through the exh holes and turned the engine and it brought the atf up. I tildted the motor on its side so the exh holes face almost up and the fluid stayed at the hole rather than seeping back down.

next characteristic it displayed is common in trying to start a motorcross bike. when some of the kicks are easy and then you get that one that is tough and the kick starter bounces and tries to come back up.

well my question is based on this info does this engine have a chance at working. I know its not much to go on.

thanks....Scott

if all the apex seals are good then it may... take a flashlight and look in the exhaust ports, and look at the housings see if they are scared..

and when the whole motorcycle thing.... if you have it in the car or are just trying to start it make shure the timing is on, that may cause it to bounce back like you said.

i am in the same proccess as you but with a 13b and 89 gtu, i got the engine for 1 bill and it was carbon locked, all i did was spray some of that pb stuff in it and it broke it loose.

well i don't know if i helped much but good luck!

turn the pulley starting with the ratchet either straight up or down, turn it in 90 degree increments. if you hear 6 blows then the engine should be ok. but then again you can't tell if you are burning coolant or oil. with the age of a 12a chances are that it needs a rebuild. take both apart see if you can reuse components and maybe sell others to save up for a rebuild kit.

I can see the housings inside from the exh ports and there is wear but no scratches or chips.

these seals look to be 3mm. are all 12A engines 3mm?

I think im just going to throw this thing in the car and give it a wurl. worst case is i lose a weekend and some oil/antifreeze.

3mm apex seals where not stock on any engine, but if it does have them it may even be ported as well... if you have the time and the know how than just go for it it may just work!

Stick ya finger in the intake port and have a feel around if ya wanna know if its been ported. Should be fairly easy to tell if you've seen a few standard plates
