So I thought it would be easy enough to just pop it out. I got the cage and the needle bearings out

So what's the trick? Any??? Much Thanks in advance.

I'm going to try a slidehammer (I didn't have one).

An Acetalene torch with an aircraft handset will do it nicely. Just heat a strip of the remaining shell up in a lengthways strip. The heat will fail the shell and fold it on itself. It will slip right out.

There is a Mazda tool for that also.

Pullers are difficult to use once you have the rollers out.

A diamond burr in a Dremel makes quick work of the race. Costs twice as much as the pilot bearing, though.

If you're careful an air grinder with a conical carbide burr works swimmingly.

I rented the tool from Autozone. It didn't fit perfectly, but a few grazes with the grinder, and it worked like a charm.

Too bad I never returned the tool to get my money back.

I got it out... For under $40

This might help anyone else with this problem.

The steel is hardened. I broke a chisel hitting it trying to split it. So that is pretty much out of the question.

I went to harborfreight. (They are only). and bought a BLIND BEARING PULLER. It's basically a slide hammer with several attachments. I put in the one that fit. Tightened it up and BAMM... Out it came.

When I'm doing with my motor I will have a whole bunch of Mazda Only Tools for sale/rent.

heres one i use to do.. by some newspaper, wet the news paper and take some pages and start stuffing it inside the e-shaft. take a 3/8 rachet extension and start to smash the wet news paper into the e-shaft. repeat a few times and the wet news papers will push the pilot bearing from inside out.. works lovely and with little effort..

I've heard bread works too. Never tried it though. The Mazda tool is worth it's weight in gasoline.
