I purchased a small high speed cutter for my Dremel which basically looks like a saw blade on the end of a long shaft. My intentions are to "fin" the inside of the aluminum housings, increasing surface area and promoting better heat transfer and hopefully a cooler-running engine. I'm not sure if this little cutter is going to work on the iron side plates. Anyone ever attempt to do this themselves? Thanks in advance.

Where excatly do you plan on cutting in these fins?
Not where the o-ring seal the side right? |
No, it's done inside the water passages. I know there's a pic of this mod up on the web...Pineapple does it. Let me find one and I'll post it.

As long as it doesnt restrict the flow too much i think it would work.

Ok, couldn't find a picture...it's called coolant passge porting. Pineapple and other engine builders offer this as an option during engine rebuilding/porting. I've begun to polish up the rotor housings so I'm going to go ahead and strategically cut a few grooves here and there, avoiding critical strength areas like around the dowel pins, etc..

So how big are the slits that you are cutting in?
I wanna see pics of this anyone ,anyone? Also do you have to so anything to keep the coolant flowing or is there a pressure drop? I have totally never heard of this. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...R#>/unsure.png |
Letheslacker, that was my first impression when I saw a housing with the coolant passage porting. It looked to add lots of turbulence to the coolant flowing through the passages. Seems to work though so why not give it a try?

I bought a pair of rotor housings that had this done to it. However i dont have a digital camera. I'll take a look at them and try to describe it later, they are over at P'Cola Fd's house. I think the slits are less than a 1/4in in with. I have heard it called the water jacket mod.

sounds like it ought to work

i understand that the cooling mod does take more heat away from the rotor housing, but it also means you need the radiator to work harder
