yes this trick of water works great and have used it many times at work i even had to use the water trick on my turbo deisel work ute after i changed the glow plugs a large peice of carbon fell off and stuck to top of piston it sounded as if the engine had run a bearing and piston was hitting the head i ran 1ltr of water into each port noise went i was happy not to be doing a dirty diesel engine

 

if the engine is off u can try bars carb cleaner and turn over the engine every 10 mins and spray the carb cleaner into the ports then try this
