ive got a spare s5 n/a engine sittin in my garage that i want to tear apart and learn how to rebuild and port. should i go with a bridge port or a peripheral port. i would only use whatever car i put it in probly one weekend out of the month to go to the track or whatever. so what would you guys suggest. i dont have much money so im goin to try and do everything myself and if i mess up oh well it was just a spare engine. i will most likely go with a carbeuration set up too.

i'm voting PP, although you need more supporting stuff to make it work, carb, exhaust etc etc

I would say the bridgeport, at least for the end irons. No additional parts to buy. You need a drill motor or drill press, and a die grinder, air or electric, some stones and sanding rolls. I use strips of a belt sander belt like a shoe shine rag to round the new port into the runner.



A degree wheel and dial indicator or a commercial mask to lay out the port shapes. A good excuse to buy whatever tool you may not have and it can be finished in a few hours.

How much does your tube frame weight Lynn? It's a 95 right?

The bare chassis with fire wall and belly pan is 135 pounds.



The car with driver needs to weigh 2080 at the end of the race in tech. We need to have 4 gallons of fuel to make that weight. The driver is about 185.



So about 1870 at the end of a race.



It replicates a 93 model. The body weighs 90 pounds.

He said he's most likely going to go with a carb so he'll need a new manifold anyways.

yeah but carb manifolds for the stock ports are easier to come by then Pport manifolds. i was under the impression that every one makes their own manifold for the Pport, at least that was my plan.

unless you get lucky like me. When i bought my mazda factory race p-port housings it came with a mazda factory p-port intake. here is a pic of the intake.

Go for the peripheral, the intake manifold dilemna isnt that bad, if you get hard up, its 2 mandrel bends for 16.00 a piece and a little welding.. The housing prep is key for the PP if you arent using MFR's, That and using the straightest e-shaft you can find. I picked through 6 before I found "the one".

A peripheral port is much better behaved down low than a bridge.
