I just took apart a motor with only about 3000 km's on it built with atkins seals, the amount of chattering on the housings in such a short time period is alarming.. Anyone else see that with their seals? Its a 3mm motor, and that is one of the pitfalls consistent it seems with 3mm metallic seals is excessive chatter and poor sealing.. By the looks of the combustion stain after the plugs on the housing face, there wasnt much sealing going on..

Alot of 3mm rotors have jamming and sticking seals, simply because no one has a good enoug machine to cut the seal slots in the right place and cut them straight like stock..All the 3mm rotors I have here from various motors, have the seal slots curved, crooked, and offset to either side...They make nice door stops anyway...

The real cure is to not detonate...

Ive had lots of rotors sloted, by a tool maker whos set up jig and gets them perfect every time. Plus on high hp or high boost engines we take the 3 mm seals and mill the back like factory 2mm seals, then cut down extra apex seal springs so you can use 2 springs per seal for more even pressure on apex seal.

The mazda machine is guided through the corner seals, then referenced from one groove to another then remeasured to ensure every chamber becomes effectively the same size, the problem with Jigs, is that not one rotor is exactly the same, whats accurate on one rotor, is not accurate on another, hence why side seals are all different lengths... Extra spring pressure actually makes chatter worse.. Mazda itself in Japan will do 3mm cutting for carbon seals, but your name has to be pretty big to get it done.

maybe the atkins engine builders are not aware of the corner seal problems. apex seal jamming caused that guys problems..

I've got an Atkins motor right now. I only put about 200 miles and 0psi on it while it was in the car though. Took it for the paint job, etc... but I'm fearing for the engine itself. A good friend of mine used Atkins at first, and that's why I went with them...as soon as I ordered my engine, his went bad.. the oil pressure wouldn't hold, dyno'd 150whp at 9psi at that too! So then, he got a new one from Atkins as they found a bad oil seal in the front rotor, his new engine only lasted 1500 miles or so. Dyno'd that one at 209 @ 9psi, made better power, had better compression ..but the seals broke. If I can find his thread I'll link to it as it was pretty sad. It was almost identical to that other guys post that you all linked to.

He now builds his own motors,lol...
