Hey dude, good work on the 20b FD build. I'm in Aussie too, QLD, and I'm contemplating one of these for my next project. Ive done engine conversions in other cars before and just wanted to ask a few Q's.
Did you find any part of the build particularly difficult?
What gearbox and ecu are you using to run it?
Lastly where did you buy your engine from( how much was it if you are happy to tell
Thanks heaps mate,
Neesan

G'day Neesan,

Probably the difficult part is fitting the engine vertically. You will see most people put the effort into this area. There are different ways to do it, buy a complete modded subframe, dry sump, shortened intake manifold.
I decided to try and do it without modding the subframe or suspension.
Mind is mounted with a standard sump, slightly modified and a depowered steering rack.
I could only fit it like this due to making a custom intake manifold.
It's mated to a standard gearbox and I'm running a Link G4 Extreme.
So far I'm very impressed with the Link.
I bought the engine from a front cut in Brissy for an expensive $5500.
It has been completely apart and modded by Xrtreme Rotaries in Melbourne.
Where abouts in Qld are you? I'm moving to Toowoomba next year.

G'day F1, thanks for your reply. I live in central qld at the moment but I'm prob moving to Lowood (between toowoomba and Ipswich) next year too. Maybe I can meet took some time and check out your car when you move. I haven't bought an fd yet, and Im trying to decide if I will look for one with a dead motor (at lower price so I have some money left over to put towards the 20b) or whether to go cheaper and easier with a 13b T51.
What do you reckon having had both engines in your car? Is yours up and on the road yet, no legal issues?
Thanks Neesan

I never got the chance to even get up my 13B setup and it destroyed a rear rotor while light throttle.....thats what I get for buying a "rebuilt" engine from a run-of-the-mill Sydney rotary shop.

The 20B is a complete monster being PP. But that was the idea, a bit of old school ported crazyness in an FD. I figured we probably cant get away with something like that for much longer.

On the road? Yes. Legal?....Well I guess that depends on how technical you want to get. The 20B conversion is legal into the FD....but in my case thats probably where the legal part stops! Haha, whatever, its incredible just to putt around in this thing!

Your more than welcome to come and have a look when I get down that way.

Cheers,

So an update here.
I tried driving it both in PP only and Primary only to see how it behaved. Evens though the ports are still there, when the PP butterflies are closed it does make a huge difference to its driveability.

Driving on the primaries only is much much quieter and it behaves a fair but nicer. The PP has a lot of induction noise and feels like the exhaust note is louder too.

So the plan at the moment is to drive it on the primaries and have the PPs actuated by a stepper motor activated by the Link ECU.

Here are some video clips for your hearing pleasure!
