You need a big socket to get the flywheel nut and measuring tools for end play and clearances. You will need probably a torch to get the main pulley bolt and either a flywheel lock or an impact that will do at least 600ft*lbs. Other than that its mostly basic tools, parts cleaning will be the most work and quite messy so a big tub of some sort to do that in is probably going to help

I would only use mazda internal parts especially water seals and apex seals.

Are you planning on using the motor from the 1st gen? I don't want to insult anyone, so my question is what motor did you get from a first gen? 12a? 13b 6port? 13b 4 port (from a 70's vehicle)? 13b 4 port (from a later turbo model)?

You may want to look into getting a cheap used motor and swap it out. You may have gotten the 87 cheap for a reason... don't get me wrong, they are great cars. But if it is not a turbo, it might not be worth the cost of rebuilding a 13b NA (unless the car is beautiful) when you can get a decent running motor for cheap... just a thought.

If not, get an 87 factory Mazda rx7 Manual. It outlines the process in step by step (outlining tools and parts needed).

the motor in the 2nd gen is fine(i think lol) its a one women owner and it was serviced regularly at mazda it needs some patch work in the floors but other then that its not a bad project car. the first gen is wrote the only thing good in it is the motor all i know about it is that it is a carburetor motor and im not shure where the markings to tell me what it is are if there are any lol. i allso found another first gen that needs a motor fender and hood for 200 bucks witch i think is good, i find the coolest things around here lol.

its a 12a, it would be a good swap into another 12a ist gen or one of the older rx's. Other than that, put a Holley/ delorto/ weber on it with a straight exhaust and drive the snot out of it. It will run like a champ.

For a 12a and with some simple grinding skills... not to bad. Mazdatrix just made an hour long video on porting and they make porting templates. But with the 12a (which only has 4 ports + exhaust) and adding a big carb, you are just adding lots of air and gas... not bad for 1.1 litres!

And if you balance it with stationary gears you can get serious rpms!

its not really hard, but it takes a lot of time, and to get it right, all the ports need to be the same, which isnt too bad but takes a lot of time
