I opened this topic to discuss different housing changes/possablities that can be done succesfully. Let's start with the side housings

Does anyone know if you can change the intermediate housing on a 87 non-turbo to a turboII housing?

Besides the obvious keep in mind the following:

1-waterjacket port openings

2-water seal grooves

3-mounting location

etc...

ok there are 7 basic "generations" of housing design, parts are usually swappable in each genderation.

67-72 cosmo 110 10a

68-71 13a

68-73 10a and 12a

74-85 12a and 13b

86-02 13b

84-96 multi rotors (13g, 13j, 20b, r26b)

04+ renesis

the 110 cosmo engines are all aluminum and has the exhaust routed differently in the rotor housing to heat it more evenly. the 13a is used in a fwd car, its narrower than a 13b and larger around. the early 70's 12a's and 10a's have the 6mm carbon apex seals, different oiling passages. the 74-85 engines go to iron 3mm apex seals, the 13b is introduced. in 86 the water seals are moved to the side housings, 2mm apex seals etc. the renesis moves the water seals back to the rotor housings, and has side porto exhausts.

the multi rotors are mutts, the early ones are based on the 74-85 style motors, the later ones use some custom housings, the 20b is based on the 86-02 motors.

they all use the same rotor shape and size, except for the 13a, the different displacement comes from making the rotors wider

What about non-turbo to turbo housing swap? or visa versa

Well if we're only talking about FC's, then the only differences, if you stay in the same series (4 or 5), is the water passages going into the intake manifold, which can be blocked off relativly easy. Also the exhaust diffuser is in the N/A models, both have the same timming though.

that is all i know to be different between the two...... S4 and S5's have differnet spark plug locations though and im sure some other differences i don't even know about.

Using a TII intermidiate plate is a convieniant way around the No-porting rules in some classes of racing. Once you start porting any diff's in the 2 styles of internidiate plates are negated by the porting

Ya in regards to the rotor housings.

I heard the same- that the 87-88 TurboII and the 89-92 had a diffrent spark plug location. From what I understood they lowered the spark plugs in the 89-92 models for a better follow thru spark. It would seem to make sense if that's true.
