Autocross - What Is It?

I've been reading through the some pages and posts, but for the life of me can't figure out what it is?
I have a feeling though it's like the australian Targa Tasmania? or perhaps a more 'geeky' simile would be the dirt/rally events in Grand Turismo 3 ?
If someone could shed the light on this situtation it would be much appreciated!!
