any one runing e85?

it takes a lot to run e85. the entire fuel system has to be swapped out and an aftermarket ecu put in and a good tune done for the different octane.

What if you're running a carburetor?

We actually recently had a discussion in the general area about running e85 in carb'd outboard engines. Phins was running e85 and it caused varnishing inside the carb and restricted the flow of the jets

Very interesting, cause i've actually been considering trying it myself.

I wonder why it would cause varnish in the gets? I would think it would leave the carb much 'tidier' and clean.. even burn cleaner. Not that any of us rotorheads are worried about the enviorment>> Lol.

Carbs seem to be more of an issue then fuel injection. The big issue is if ethanol sits for more then a week, sometimes phase separation occurs, it also absorbs moisture from the air (in the tank) and as mentioned my issues were/are massive amounts of varnish in the carb float bowl and jets.

Now that makes sense.

Used for years by USAC and many others. Flush the system with gasoline when done thus eliminating much of the trouble pointed out.



Requires bigger jets, as it has 30% fewer BTUs per pound. Absorbs lots of heat so racers have very small radiators, allows for very high compression ratios even when boosted. Needs a high output ignition system. Pulls water out of the air very quickly. Flush when finished.
