Thumbs up

Just getting ready to install a new boost controller on my 93 FD3S.

Should be nice – a Blitz SBC ID.

Problem: I think the people who installed the previous boost controller were on crack.

1. A Greddy Profec A fuzzy logic controller was installed. This is the reason for the new boost controller (fuzzy logic systems are not supposed to be installed on sequential turbo systems)

2. Seems as though the WAIST GATE AND TURBO PRECONTROL actuators were both connected together going to the output on the controller unit

3. Of the two charge pipe connections, only one was connected to the input of the controller unit and the other appears to be exposed to atmospheric pressure.

Solution: Looking for opinions, corrections, and suggestions guys.

1. Replace the old boost controller with the new one listed above.

2. Turbo precontrol actuator should be reverted to stock configuration. (One hose going to solenoid located under pressure chamber and the other going to one of the charge pipe fittings).

3. Waist gate actuator should be connected to the output of the boost controller solenoid unit and the input of the boost controller solenoid unit should be connected to the charge pipe fitting that is left.

The problematic configuration was there when I got the car. I had no idea that it could have been so messed up. The car has been driven under this configuration for about three to four months.

The challenge question: For the diehard wiz-bangs

What kind of damages might I have incurred from driving the car with the problematic boost controller configuration?

Not sure how bad it is – the over-boost warning alarm worked and I was only running at 0.8 bar. It was throttle off at the sound of the over-boost warning.

As always, I appreciate any feedback guys. I am still new to this and I need constant sanity checks.

I’m not sure we’re trying here friends.

A simple “Yes you’re right” or “No you’re wrong” would be fantastic.

Thanx everyone.

Installing the boost controller to both the precontrol and the wstegate is not incorrect.

There have been a lot of discussion on it.

The proble is that if you connect it only to the wastegate you cant have more boost on first turbo, the why is easly understandable.

The problem you had may be a retard in the bov opening, having overboost at closed throttle has no sense, if it were a problem in the wastegate and/or precontrol/control gate you would have it also in other circumstances

Could you please point me to this discussion? I can think of no reason why I would want my prespooler and wastegate operating at the same time. It doesn’t make any sense to do this. If these two systems could work properly off a single solenoid control, Mazda would have saved some money and done it that way. If you really wanted to get crazy and you had a bunch of money you didn’t really need, I could see installing a separate boost controller to control the boot pressure at which the prespooler operates. However, Mazda already has the system setup to operate the prespooler when the first turbo reaches a respectable capacity. I am not sure that you know what you are talking about. But please, I would greatly appreciate it if you proved me wrong.

Well, you are not wrong, but if you attach your Boost controller only to the WG you cant have more than 10 psi on the first turbo (try, it is very easy and quick to do both tests).

See the discussions about it on Rob Robinette or Steve Cirian sites.

However, boost on first turbo is controlled only with the prespooler i think, well it has no sense to use also the WG, unless you have such a quick spool that the prespool port is too small to control the boost pressure on turbine side (that's what may occur if you have a downpipe/midpipe setup or something more), in fact the prespool acts like a small wastegate, the principle is the same.

Greddy says to install both its boost controller (profec A and B) only to the WG, instead Apexi with AVC-R says to use both WG and Prespool.

Well i do not have a Boost controller yet, but i tryed to read a lot on them before installing it, in order to have a good knowloedge on the theme before getting into it and maybe do something wrong, here in Italy no one knows how to work on the '7 and almost no one knows about boost controller or something like those pretty electronics you have over there.

Another good reason is that, if i am right, that your system set up this way, worked fine, Mazda used two solenoids because the stock '7 does not have such a quick spool, so they had to use two solenoids.

Conclusions: if you have a quick spool setup (downpipe, midpipe and so on) set it on both WG and PSC, if you are stock or close to stock and don't want more than 10psi on first turbo, set it only on WG

I can't even begin to tell you how wrong you are on several counts. Look here to see how the turbo control system works: http://www.autosportracetech.com/RX-7/rx7stuff.htm

Kamikaze: Just rehook the pre-control to the factory connections and hook the wastegate only to the boost controller. You can get higher boost on the primary just fine (I easily get 13 psi on the primary/secondary this way and it works great for hundreds of other people). Most people who hook up the pre-control and wastegate to the EBC solenoid get spiking at the transition.

So why Apexi says to connect the AVCR to both?

The Apexi is different than most boost controllers. Also, I have heard from many people that the AVC-R sucks at controlling sequential twins with spiking at the transition....

Guys, you have no idea how appreciative I am that you actually responded to my thread. This post has been up for a long time and has gotten no response. It kind of sucks because the work is usually done by the time I get any feedback.

I had decided to connect the boost controller solenoid to the wastegate only. I should have the car running a little later this week and I will let you both know how it goes. The car has been and is still undergoing a major operation otherwise I would have an answer for you right now.

Sorry Capitancombo, I am going to have to side with rynberg on this one.
