I noticed that I'm regularly supposed to adjust the valves on my motorcycle. Are piston cars supposed to have the same service done with regularity? I haven't heard of it, it makes me wonder...

yah, you adjust valve lash with feeler guages. Its the space between the rocker and valve. You need to consult the specs of the engine to see what the tolerances are. Adjusting valve lash is easy though.

Baldy 03-19-2003 03:08 PM

yeah, I've done it on a motorcycle before (the fc is my first car)...I just never hear of anyone I know adjusting their valves on their car...maybe it's one of those things people always overlook because they think all they have to do is change the oil...

cymfc3s 03-19-2003 03:22 PM

Opps, didnt finish my post before i hit enter. haha. Most modern piston engines use hydraulic lifters, etc and never need a valve adjustment.

Baldy 03-19-2003 03:32 PM

ahhh...like the honda shadow sabre 1100....I was thinking about that...

Niether is ROTOR.. even if you spell it backwards.. wow..

Apex13B 03-19-2003 09:24 PM

the only time a hydraulic lifter's clearance lash need to be checked is when you put new valves/springs in the head. The diffenrence in stem height of the valve could WIPE out a tappet in no time at all, seen this on F355's when idiot monkeys rebiuld them

TYSON 03-19-2003 09:26 PM

How many valve lengths are out there for 355's?

Apex13B 03-19-2003 09:27 PM

BTW..if you want to hear a lot of top end noise...just listen to a 5 valve audi turbo motor and you'll hear "click click" all the time....oil restriction to the head because of bottom end clearance issues https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif

j9fd3s 03-19-2003 11:43 PM

ive sold 1000's of hydraulic lifters for the mpv's 626's and miata, they switched to manual valves cause they are quieter

quite a few actually, full race motors need longer valves because you coil bind a normal height spring with a 546 cam

Rotarydragon 04-18-2003 02:19 PM

Air cooled VW's have to be adjusted. .006 clearance.
