Stuck Between Two 7s
#1
Now I know I don't post on here much but I'm really stuck and need some help on what to do.
I've got a 89 XR7 cougar that is in bad need of my rebuilding it and go back to hunting down vettes but I also have a 13bt laying in the back of my parts car with a blown apex seal waiting to be rebuilt.
Now here's my problem, both engines are force inducted, the cougar being a supercharged 3.8 and the 13bt well that needs no explaining but I'm torn between building the 13bt and putting it in my gxl and having so much fun driving it that I forget about the cat or building the 3.8.
I'll list a few pros and cons on both cars.
Cougar pros.
Massive torque, lots of head and leg room, auto adjusting suspension rides like a dream and allows the 4000lb car to handle better then one would expect, belive it or not mine has a very nice look with the front "wiskers" as I call them and no one expects a land yachet to pull on them.
Cons.
It weighs 4000lbs without me in it, it's a boat, has bad wheel hop when launching, the rear has been slightly dented in from where someone tryed to steal it and backed into a tank.
RX-7 pros.
Light, nice styling, well I can go on and on about the pros but I'm sure everone gets the jest of this.
Cons.
No leg room, poor gas milage (not that this matters to me), parts can be a little on the steep side, and that's about it.
As far as the rebuild goes for the cougar I'm looking anywhere from 5-15k to get it where I want it, 5k would be getting it back together right and any after that would be building the bottom end.
The RX-7 on the other hand I've heard different prices ranging from 500-1500 just to rebuild it. When I do rebuild it I plan on going with a large street port and that's as far as I'm going with the internals. I haven't been shopping for all the parts for the RX-7 yet so my list is somewhat short but still a little high, around 7,000 when all is said and done I hope.
So what Should I do, build the XR7 first or build the RX-7?

Well I plan on having both cars back on the road sooner or later but the RX-7 is already running just on a N/A block. I'm leaning more towards building the 13bt but I really miss driving the cat around, it had both heads lifted off the block after hitting 15psi and having a bad connection on the "super chip" that was on it causing it to detonate severly.

Not to rain on your parade but that rear suspension (it is IRS right?) isn't worth the time to put any money into it. If you want to make a nice cruiser with some sudden thrust capability don't waste time with the original super coupe engine and put in the new ford 5.0 cammer crate motor. They have pumped it up to around 400 ponies N/A and the engine will cost you around 5 grand. This option means no F/I problems, a better stock engine, and a warranty. The 13bt would be my choice but that is only because I never liked the new model cougars (classic 69 fan) and it is also much more of a sudden thunder car then any 4000lb coupe.

keep the gxl stock for daily activities. find a rust free first gen. rebuilt the 13bt install in first gen. take rear out of cougar, install in first gen. voila....
this man is brilliant, do it.

This is a mn12 cougar not the early to mid 80's style but I get what you're saying. I do plan on having both back on the road but I'm just torn as to which to finish first. Like I said I'm leaning towards the 7 I'm just unsure how much it is going to be to finish it.
