I bought a 1990 caprice 305 engine code e 9.3:1 copmressing 305 TBI for really cheap at auction. i needed a colant temp sensor fuel filter general maitainace and other minor repairs. I DROVE THE CAR ALOT AND IT WOULD SMOKE SOMETIMES BUT MOST OF THE TIME IT WOULD NOT? the car ideled really high and i located a vacum leak and replaced the tb gasket. the car seemed to drive okay but still had high idle and vacum leak. i finaly found the leak today and fixed the problem

these were the # on my scanner.

rpm 775 (a little high but nice and smooth)

colant temp 143F (only runing 15 mins in driveway)

o2 .46 v (norm)

tps .66v at idel 4.23v at WOT (a little high at closed and a little low at wot)

map 08 (normal)

IAC 34 (normal)

THE CAR WAS RUNNING BETTER THAN EVER

all was well and i was very happy. i took the car for a short drive got back home and it started to smoke bad and run like a bag the engine light was on as well.

i pulled the codes 15 collant temp and 54 fuel pump relay

i atempted to start the car and it wouldnt go i held the throtle to the floor and tryed again it fired up almost died cought itself kept running and it smoked bad a combo of really rich oil and colant all burning idle very rough as well

these were the numbers

rpm 550-575 (bouncing around)

colant 152 (to cold)

o2 .46

tps.66

map 10 (higher than before)

IAC 65 (way to high)

once agian it SMOKES LIKE A DOG WORSE AS RPMS GET HIGHER

DID I BREAK A RING?

IS IT REALLY RUNNING THAT RICH?

WOULD THE FUEL PUMP RELAY CAUSE THIS? (i dont think it would)

i dont think fixing the vacum leak would cause more problems inless the increas in vacum would damage an old intake gasket?

PLEASE POST ANY IDEAS YOU MAY HAVE IT WOULD BE REALLY APPRICIATED

is my good old $400 pos beater finaly dead?

i dunno about on those cars, but on a lot of cars if the coolant temp sensor starts to go bad it will do all sorts of crazy things to a car. did you use a brand new one or a used one?
