My New/old Maxima
#1
Ok, the seller said the car wouldn't go in reverse. Well, it goes in reverse just fine. But when in drive, it accelerates to about 15 or 20 mph, then it doesn't get any faster. The engine revs, and the engine sounds good, but the car just doesn't move any faster. I'm guessing it's the torque converter, does that sound right? If so, can that just be swapped out, or is that something people typically repair? My only car experience is with the rx-7, so I don't know much about automatics, besides what I've read here and there.
And I've been trying to use the maxima forum, but they have some serious problems over there!

Which Maxima forum? Did you try freshalloy.com, I think their Maxima forum is pretty active as well.
I would say replace torque convertor, but then I have zero practical experience of Maximas so take it for what it's worth . . .

I would say your tranny is shot and to take it to a mechanic and let
them put it on a scanner to see of the tranny is giving any codes.

On freshalloy.com, one guy suggested that if I see metal flakes in the fluid, or it is black and smells burnt, the tranny is shot. He said otherwise, try some kind of tranny-repair-in-a-bottle type of stuff. I'm guessing it would be worth it to replace the fluid and filter, since I don't have the money for a tranny right now. Or is it usually like, when it's shot it's shot, not doubt about it???

start calling junkyards and see if they have any trannies.
did you check the fluid at all? Maybe its low and topping it
off will help out, just make sure to check the fluid when the
car is warmed up already and check it with the engine running.
