My friend just got a 2000 Mercury Mystique, he says a shop told him it needed a new fuel pump. He wanted me to help him replace it. I did a search online, and this is the only thing I came up with on how to do it:

pull up the rear seat cushion, and youll see about a 4-5" circular opening. Youll have to use some tin snips to cut the sheet metal and pry it open to access the fuel cell lid. Youll probably have to take a flathead screwdriver and hit the retaining ring with a hammer to spin it loose. Once you do that, the lid will come off and youll be able to see the fuel pump.

Does that sound right? I try to avoid using tin snips and hammers on any one job, but I've yet to take an actual look at his car to see what it's like.

well on vw's, to acces the intanke feul pump you have to take out the trunk carpet, pry off a rubber seal (= the metal thing u have to cut through) then break loose another nut thing... then u can get to it... so sounds right to me..

There is a reason why it's called the Mercury MISTAKE, the electrical system on those things sucks, alts go all the time it has electrical gremlins like the FC, it was actually designed my Mazda.

But yes that does sound right, remove the cusion, and spin the ring. tin snips, never seen those used before....
