specifically acura integras. between the s, rs, ls, vtec, si, type r....whatever their model designations were. did they have different bottom end??

my friend is trying to tell me that the best combo is an ls engine with a vtec or type r head cause the ls bottom end is stronger, or some dumb caca like that. my thoughts were that all the bottom ends were basically the same and the head, were vtec comes into play was what made the difference.

i own an rx7 and know a few things about them, dont own or know jack about hondas, other than tehre are a few with a few tricks up their sleeves....

thanks

The RS, LS, and GS all had the same engine, which is often called the LS engine. I can't remember if the GSR had a different bottom end, but the Type R did, higher compression pistons, as well as the head being P+P right from the factory. Some other differences too, but I'm reading up on rotaries right now...

The reason an LS bottom end with a VTEC head is good is because of the higher displacement of the LS engine, like an extra 35cc on top of the VTEC engines.

VTEC is just what Honda call their version of variable valve timing, so it can't have been invented by Mazda.

I would imagine you mean that Mazda invented variable valve timing, but I'm not sure about that either. As far as I know that honour goes to Porsche, I think they had a system under development in the 30's, but it's a bit of a grey area.

regardless.. the rotary has no valves.. it is a variable intake system.. not valve system..

My last car was a 95 RS Integra..... Ughh, no power, but decent torque. One of my friends has a 96 GSR, and there is a very noticeable difference between his car and my old one. Anyway the B18B1 or "LS" engine that was in my RS, and every GS, and LS has a bit more torque than a "GSR" or B18C1 but is short 30 horsepower compared to the GSR. The "Type R" or B18C5 was a version of the GSR except the throttle body was a bit larger, P&P intake manifold, and a few other goodies like different cam profiles which added up to an additional 30 hp over the GSR, and I'm not sure of the torque figures. Anyway the VTEC motors -GSR, and Type R, had a higher redline than the non VTEC, and more horsepower, but the bottom ends of the non VTEC engines had always been considered to be stronger, and for some reason pushed more torque out. I'm not sure of the exact science of it, but yes I was in the Honda community for a while and Type R heads on LS blocks became the goal of almost everyone. Of course there were others that had different combos H22A prelude blocks with Type R heads, and blah blah blah, don't want to bore you with that. All I can say is I have upgraded to a 13BREW and I haven't looked back for a second!

The reason behind the lack of Torque down low in the GSR (or Type R) models is due to the smaller size (1.6-1.7 litre) as well as the valve timing itself.

Basically, the Vtec models rob some torque from the bottom to shove it to the top. In a Type R it's noticable, but the GSR I've driven (95) wasn't anything special.

I mean, come on, it already has very little torque, why steal more to throw it up top?

The difference isn't anything crazy IMO.

I drive a 92 LS (So no Vtec) as my Daily Driver, I get 30-32mpg and while 140hp it boasts isn't fast...it's "Supple" for the MPG I receive.

So yea, to really make a Honda fast takes LOTS of engine work, not just "More Vtec". It's a HUGE waste of money IMO.

But as far as for what it is: My integra is awesome. It handles pretty good (For FWD) and definitely shifts more sporty than a camry or some other FWD 4 cylly (Cause it's "Sports" inspired..) and again, I get 30mpg so its all cinnamin-gravy. Plus its super reliable.

IMO the Gen2's (other than TypeR) were more quality-made than the Gen3's. Drive both and you'll see.
