If you were going to build a domestic car, what would you build? I'm bored and want to start another project. I've been thinking of building a fox body mustang, but they are so common. It's really easy to make a fox body retarded fast, but I still want something that has a certain appeal to it. I've also thought along the lines of a Chevy II, but my budget is limited to 10K, so that rules that out. Thought about the early 70's cutlass, delta, etc, but my brother has already done that.

Requirements are rear wheel drive, domestic, and 10k to get to the bracket races. Throw some suggestions out please.

Please no comments about rotary this, rotary that, blah blah blah. I have one now, it's a pain in the ass, and I want to try something different.

4th gen camaro/firebird. lt1s are cheaper than garbage..and a high mile ls1 can be had for almost nothing. i've seen 98 camaro ss with 100k on em go for 8k. motors are pretty much bullet proof as long as you change the oil. if you get a 93-97 with a lt1...they handle f/i or n20 very well because of the iron block and they too are really reliable. do you have a certain type of engine that you want? or just any ideas? i've seen some sickly fast 2nd gen rx7s with a ls1 motor in them..also seena few fox body mustangs with a ls1 in them.

1. Buick T-Type, or GN if you can pick one up cheap enough to mod and still be under budget.

2. '65-'66 Mustang. Easy to find reasonably clean ones for $5-6K. I have mine at 2100 lbs with a 351W bored and stroked to 390 inches. Based on the 1/4 mile time, it's probably a little over 400hp at the crank, which is easy to do for under $4K if you know what you're doing.

3. Or, just get an LS-1 car, throw on slicks and go low 13s stock, then toss more money at it later when you can.

pushrod v8.

ls1 is not the answer to everything, it's a very expensive engine to build.

i was thinking either modern engine (281dohc or even aluminum 302), and some form of positive displacment......or big donkey v8 (+400 ci) with a carb

The dirt cheap option would be an early 80's malibu. They can be had for pocket change. Then you could put all your money in the drivetrain. They're also fairly light, I believe.

The wife wants a Chevy II, but I'm with you on the cost. It's amazing how hot those cars are right now. You can't find a decent one for less than $15k.

2nd or 3rd Gen. camaro with a big-block. You can find a decent chassis for less than 5k. Buy a crate 502ci and bam, you are in buisness.

Oh, please! Camaros are SOOO bourgeois. They have been done to death.

Midnightdriver 07-30-2005 10:23 AM

I'd agree 2nd/3rd gen camaro..with crate motor. don't exactly need a 502 they have rather large bore small blocks as well....

they expensive to build, but if you buy a low mileage motora dn tranny froma wrecked car....it would be good for a really long time. there is on guy on ls1.com who has a 99 camaro. it has a 127k on it...stock bottom end and he is running a supercharger at 15psi for 20k or so. its running low 11s on street tires I believe and running about 550whp.
