havent looked back here in awhile. but yeah the bug suspension was changed to irs in 69. (68 for autosticks) and then the super beetles had the same steering setup as the porsches for that time.

I may be wrong, but last I checked porsche suspension and weight distribution at that time was nothing to call home about. I recall some things like adding 60+ lbs of ballast weight to the front bumper and calling it a bumper support in an attempt to improve the balance of the car regarding porsches back then.

word. this also has the mcpherson strut and such. the only problem is the suspension is really tempermental in the a2 GTI's if you load up more than two people then you will scrap on hard corners. just make sure you get a good set of tires. these things have some pep to them. I know they are not fast but they are pretty quick with something like 130 hp and 113 foot lbs. they are a fun *** car.

 

If you're talking about non-exotic, reasonably priced cars, then you have to mention the Porsche 914. Perennial autocross contenders.

Too many cars, too little time

 

I would say the original Austin/Morris Mini. Nothing can hold a candle to a well sorted mini around the corners...could have something to do with the fact they are so light (1300lbs). They dont go fast in a straight line until you give them a bit more power though (100+). Im planning a 20B mid engined Mini here and should be going in a few years...

 

i have a 71' datsun 510 with a 13b and numerous other modifications inluding a roll bar, subaru lsd diff., corvette disc brakes, and an aftermarket suspension. it was built for autocross racing and weighs 2100 lbs with a driver in the car.



i nominate my car for best handling "light" car.
