so i finally had a chance to really beat on one of these, its a blue 99 m3 vert, 81k, its one of our used cars so its totally worn out, and the $5500 automatice transmission sometimes doesnt shift.

anyways, i drove it, and i'm sorta wondering how we used to think those cars were cool? i still like the ouside, but the interior looks and feels cheap, and the car drove like dog poop....

so here's the good:

engine, it feels strong, sounds good, fast enough you can drive like an *******, but slow enough you're not doubling speed limits, so its fun

top goes down!

bad:

changes lanes when you make big throttle changes; prolly the subframe ripped out of the floor, but it goes left when you hit gas, right when you lift, and over 70 it just wiggles back and forth, scary!

brakes work, but pedal effort is just high, brakes are mushy

the dash, frankly i wanted to just start smashing it, its so cheesy and lame

so basically its a fast shitbox, again, not the best example of an m3, but it did make me look for curbs to run over, and i do want to go get my hammer and just smash it. i sorta cant believe we thought it was cool, or it aged that badly

anyone else drive one?

That's very interesting in light of the fact that I've driven an older (1991) 325is with 250k on the clock and I was amazed at how tight it was. Granted, I didn't beat on it hard, as it was a co-worker's car, but it seemed to have aged very well. But this gentleman was good about keeping up with maintenance. I do recall clutch and brake effort were pretty high. Must be a BMW trademark.

Goes to show, I suppose, what a lot of abuse and minimal maintenance will do to any car, particularly one with a lot of power.

I wasn't real impressed with the 04 and 05 M3's I drove. Decent cars but way over rated.

Resonator and cat back system with CAI is definately on my list of mods to do. It sounds so bad.

why waste the money on resonaters and an expensive cat-back system? Just take it to a muffler shop and have them hack-off the mufflers and replace them with 2.5 inch SS tubing.

Resonator delete I should have said. Got to pass emissions so I'm stuck with a muffler. Got a guy around here who did our other cars though so I'll probably have him fab something together for me when I get to that point.
