after watching the video i noticed a related video about the 792. it was only showing them sitting in and revving the engine, but it was definitely a 4 rotor so i got curious. according to wikipedia, after the fia rule change banning rotaries mazda took the 4 rotor to america to race in IMSA. the car was rediculously lightweight and far outpowered anything it was racing against, but had a bad habit of catching fire.

here's the car

and here's the wiki article

lol yeah, but unfortunately the rotary is to current racing as the hemi was to stock car racing. they're scared of it because it has a better volumetric effeciency than any other engine available. what happens when the people with money (toyota, ferrari, etc) get threatened by something that's cheaper and easier? they have it banned in any way possible to prevent profit cut. the fd made almost the same hp as the erly 90's lt-1's came stock. the FD was a lot more expensive than a camaro, but was much more potent on the track. thanks to people not treating their FD's right (not checking oil, not getting it serviced when it needed, etc.) the engine got a bad rep with the media. that plus the stricter emissions laws and safety laws finally led to mazda stopping importing them to america after 95.
