My cousin let me take his 911 for a spin once when I was 19. It was a 71 911T with a 2.5 engine prepared by Black Forest Racing the car was a fully prepped race car. I was amazed at its handling and acceleration.



I was taking interstate clover leafs at 100MPH and lovin it!!



I am now 37 and 3 years ago ALMOST bought a 1984 911 with 300RWHP and lots of upgrades for $25K. I had a bad deal go down with my business that set me back 20K so bye bye porsche.



I ended up with a 90GTU RX-7 then sold it for my current car (see sig).



I never looked back I now have 25K invested in my TII and a 911 would have a hard time keeping up with it in the straights or in turns.

When I Autocross I always look to see where the 911's are at I am always ahead.



You will not regret your decision to go this route. The only advice I could give you is to decide whether or not to go turbo now before buying. Its more expensive but with a non-turbo you will hit a performance ceiling fast.

Not too many 80's 911's (or any other year for that matter) are gonna be able to run with a rotary that clicks off 12.60 quarters. Maybe some 930 turbos, but they've got their hands full in the turns. Those beasts are unruly when the boost comes on. If you lift the throttle too much whilst in a high speed turn, you're gonna swap ends in a hurry!



And like everybody says, "Yeah a Porsche is cool, but I could buy three of my car for what you paid for the Porsche." They ain't cheap. Unique, but not cheap.

 

I swapped ends with my cousins 911 at 80 MPH. It was not fun. NEVER lift the throttle in a turn. Oops. I was young and stupid. MyRX-7 may be faster but a Porsche 911 is a work of art in my book.



BTW- I hope to shatter that 12.60 Friday night. I was having boost issues and it was 90° when I ran that 12.60.

 

I guess I should be a bit more specific.



The 911 can be tamed with bigger rubber and suspension work, but the opportunity is still there to change ends. And the fine line between control and loss of control gets much thinner the more you tweak the susp. for increased grip!



As far as the speeds of the 911 go, any stock one is nothing too formidable. My car only (3.2L NA)has around 220 hp. Big deal. But if you start stripping useless stuff out (A/C for example- doesn't work anyway) it gets lighter and quicker quite easily. 2500-2600 lb is not to hard to achieve on a porker like mine. If you take an early 70's car, you can get around 2000 lb. Throw in a 300 hp 3.6L NA and you got yourself a mighty quick car. Sub-5 0-60 time and under 13 sec. quarters is not uncommon. Problem is, a 3.6 conversion is gonna cost you around $10-12K easy.



I'll bet you RX fellas can do some serious damage with $12K!!!!!

Hell yeah, man you outta stick around. Seems like your proficient with porches and honestly I've never really understood their heretage, other than they are small and fast. They have a cult following by many racers, but I've never had the pocket book to find out why.



It's cool to get an outsider's (soon to be insider's) opinion. On our cars, as well as someone who can compare these cars in performance to porches. (other than your typical spec junkie) you have experience.

 

I sink 2G's into my 1Liter and ill be 1900lbs and 260hp. Hmmm...

 

I'd like to go on record as saying there is NOTHING wrong with me, but the rest of these guys have....issues.

 

I LOVE PORCHES!!! Especially screened-in ones.
