hey folks

the following may not belong here, so just say so and i'll depart.

the questions are about a rotary cycle , not a car. i am purchasing a couple of suzuki re5 projects to rebuild, and need to know about mods to help mostly fuel economy, but drivability as well.. these bikes werent in production long enough to work out all the deficiencies that showed up.(1974/76) i only have a nodding aquaintance with the wankel, and need guidance on diy mods i can do during rebuild.. i have done a lot of this in the past but only to piston engines. advice on seal mods, carb, ports, and exhaust will be appreciated. thanks in advance for any help.

I think a problem you might find is that not too many people modify wankels for fuel economy.

I would think the stock setup would be best, but I'm totally unfamiliar with the RE5's. I am, however very interested, could you post some information about the motor?

RE5 engine is a single rotor, liquid cooled NSU Wankel with 497 cc displacement, and is rated at 62 hp at 16,500 rpm with a compression ratio of 9.4:1. I thought the rpm might be wrong, but have found it in several different places.



carb is a mikuni 18-30 , and from pictures, appears to be a 2 stage, 2bbl. i don't have the bikes, (its a pair, a 74, and a 75). but will have them soon. they also have dual plug ignition which i gather is the norm for rotaries. if i am unable to improve the economy, i will settle for drivability, as in low end torque.,etc.. i understand port mods are the same as 4 stroke cam mods, at least as regards duration, overlap, etc, and it s effect on powerband. they also have a reputation for bucking and poping in traffic, which is geneally attributed to the dual point ingition system. this is all my research has produced so far. any suggestions are appreciated.

There is little low end torque with the rotary (well, less compared to larger engines) The rpm figure maynot be wrong, because rotaries are high end machines. Once the revs are up, the fun has finally begun. THe problem is obtaining parts for that particular rotary. (NSU went out of business a LONG time ago)
