Alright guys, I need a little help and an update on termanology and abbrieviations 'n what not. Basically, I know all the basic stuff like the gen chassis codes and VIN numbers what not like FD3S, JM1FD, FC3S, JM1FC, FB3S, SA22C. I know what most of the engines are, 10A, 12A, 13B, 20B, R26B etc etc. But I see everyone talking about s4 and s5 and what not, I have never heard this before, I would like to know what else do I need to know? Engine series I don't need to know, I read wikipedia. But I'd like to know all the other terms and abbrieviations needed for FB3S/SA22Cs, FC3S, FD3S, please don't insult me I'm only trying to learn more and more, thats what I'm here for.

s4 means an 86-88 rx-7

s5 means and 89-91 rx-7

although they Look similar exterior the engine components are each are different and the cars have different options

s5 rx-7s run higher compression rotors than s4 and also have a different intake manifold

also s5's have more durable rubber interior console pieces and the exterior rub strips are color coded rather than just black rubber like the s4's

trim levels are denoted differently for each series:

i believe s4's have: base, gxl, and turbo

s5 i think is: coupe, gtu,gtu-s,and turbo

s5 also have diffrent front and rear bumpers than s4 and clear turn signals. some s5's also have "raised" sidemarkers though i believe that depends on the vin.-

Ohh I see, yeah I know the engine differences between the years.. 86'-88' had 146hp 89-91 had 160hp with the 13B-DEI NAs. 87'-88' TIIs had 185hp and the 89'-91' had 200hp.

But yeah thanks man, now I know what ppl mean when they say s4 and s5 etc.

S4 also had the SE model.

1991 S5 NA's weird a little odd. They had A and B packages, or both. Turbo (not TII) and the convertible only came one way, loaded.

And not to nitpick, but its GTUs, not GTU-S.

If you have an N/A S4, the 5 and 6 ports run of a return from the exhaust manifold. The 5 and 6 ports in a S5 are actuated by the air pump. So if you have an S4 engine and you want to upgrade the exhaust, you need to make sure it has the fitting to run the 5 and 6 ports.

Happy rotoring.
